A mode of consciousness defined by self-transcendence, self-relation, lack, and nothingness. Being-for-itself is always freedom projected toward what it is not yet; human reality is conceived in this mode. Sartre’s doctrine of freedom and responsibility derives from this self-transcending and causally undetermined structure.
