The regulatory framework that presupposes a “natural” alignment among sex, gender, and desire; a network of norms that mandates the female/male–heterosexual binary. This matrix determines which genders and desires will be regarded as “intelligible”; by excluding queer subjects, it produces the domains of deviance and abjection, thereby reinforcing normative identity politics.
