Not the object of desire but the cause of desire, as the figure of the lost object, that is, of lack; one of Lacan’s most original concepts. Since the primordial loss is a retroactively constructed fiction, objet a is in fact a 'non-object object,' an image of residual excess and emptiness. Partial objects (the breast, feces, voice, gaze, etc.) assume this function; the subject organizes its desire around this imaginary object.
