Two distinct perspectives on language: its state at a given moment (synchrony) and its development through time (diachrony). While the traditional doctrine presents them as hierarchical opposites, readings of Saussure’s Nachlass show that he regarded them as equally necessary and mutually implicated dimensions of language.
