The general ontological condition of vulnerability whereby all bodies are dependent on others and on social conditions, and are inherently susceptible to injury and mortality. The texts argue that dependence on others and vulnerability from birth constitute the foundation of Butler’s “social ontology” and provide an ethical and political basis for the principle of equality.
