The function of meaning constituted through enunciation and its relation to the world, distinct from the semiotic level. Benveniste uses signification as a term specific to the semantic level and distinguishes it from the system of signs (the semiotic). Meaning thus arises not only from differences among signs but from the process of enunciation involving expression, subjectivity, and reference to the world.
