The experience of being exposed to the gaze of another, through which I appear to myself as an object. Together with shame and pride, the look provides phenomenological evidence of the Other’s existence and reveals the structure of being-for-others. Contemporary readings also interpret it as a possibility for recognition and reciprocity.
