The function of deictic forms in establishing reference from within discourse to extra-discursive time, space, and objects. Studies discuss reference to the world by considering deixis together with Benveniste’s apparatus of enunciation, arguing that all signs are ultimately constituted through enunciation and deixis. The ontology of the sign is thereby remodeled within the triangle of subject–other–object.
