A being structured by language, incomplete and emerging through the division between signifiers under the effect of the symbolic order. In Lacan, the subject is distinct from the ego (the image-based self): while the ego is an imaginary construction, the subject is an effect of the symbolic chain of signifiers. Studies of psychosis emphasize how this structure of the subject can be disrupted, particularly in relation to the Real and jouissance.
