A lack-based motivation arising from the difference between need and demand, one that can never be fully satisfied by any object. As a 'central concept,' desire connects other Lacanian figures (objet petit a, jouissance, the Other). Even when needs are satisfied, desire persists because its cause is loss and lack, not a particular object.
