The developmental threshold at which the child recognizes the image of its whole body in the mirror and the ego is constituted in the imaginary register. Lacan defines the mirror stage as the formative moment of the 'I' function; the child identifies its fragmented and incomplete bodily experience with a whole, mastered image. This identification is both a source of narcissistic pleasure and alienation; the subject always constitutes itself through an image located outside itself.
