An ethical theory that evaluates the moral rightness of actions according to their consequences for overall happiness. Mill argues that, based on the social nature of human beings, the foundation of morality lies in the promotion of “general happiness”; a morally right action is one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. This framework also provides a basis for the liberty principle, since the protection of individual freedoms tends, in the long run, to increase overall happiness. Mill’s utilitarianism is often interpreted as a form of liberal utilitarianism, enriched by concepts such as character development, justice, and liberty.
