That which can be reduced neither to imaginary representation nor to symbolic naming: the traumatic core and irrepressible excess. Trauma, jouissance, objet a, and moments of the subject’s erasure are different figures of the Real. In Lacan’s later work, together with the concepts of the knot and jouissance, the Real becomes central, especially in reflections on psychosis and the body.
