The domain of language, law, and social order; the symbolic place to which the subject’s desire and discourse refer. The subject emerges only by speaking in the language of the Other and by acquiring a recognized 'place' within it. Desire, too, is shaped according to the desire of the Other: the subject often seeks not what it wants, but what the Other wants from it.
