The domain of images, ego-images, and dual relations of identification. The ego is a product of the imaginary order; for this reason, Lacan is critical of therapies aimed at strengthening the ego, regarding it as a primary source of resistance. Unless knotted together with the Symbolic and the Real, the Imaginary traps the subject in narcissistic closures and fantasies of wholeness.
