The practice by which individuals freely explore different ways of life, thereby generating knowledge and value both for themselves and for society. Opposing a uniform conception of life, Mill defends the free testing of diverse modes of living. Such experiments enable individuals to discover their own conception of the good while also allowing society to challenge and reassess mistaken beliefs. Within the framework of the harm principle, experimental ways of life that do not harm others should be protected despite society’s moral disapproval. In this way, experiments in living serve as a bridge between liberty, individuality, and social progress.
