The relationship between the happiness of individual persons and the overall happiness of society. Mill argues that because each individual desires his or her own happiness, the aggregate happiness of all individuals constitutes the proper moral standard; thus, general happiness is understood as the sum of individual happinesses. However, general happiness is not merely a matter of aggregate quantity but is also connected to the fair distribution of benefits and the preservation of conditions of liberty. For this reason, the protection of individual freedom and justice is regarded as a necessary condition for the promotion of general happiness.
