An approach that advocates interfering with an individual’s freedom against his or her will for that person’s own good. Mill is generally interpreted as an anti-paternalist, since, according to the harm principle, “a person’s own physical or moral well-being” is not a sufficient reason for intervention. However, some interpretations suggest that Mill allows for “soft paternalistic” interventions in cases such as mental incapacity or the self-renunciation of freedom (for example, voluntary enslavement). This debate reflects the tension between the liberty principle and the utilitarian objective of promoting welfare.
