A form of political rationality that regulates the life processes of populations—such as health, fertility, mortality, and labor capacity—and transforms life itself into an object of governance. Biopolitics complements and extends disciplinary power over individual bodies by seeking to optimize life, manage risks, and normalize populations at a collective level. In this way, modern power operates through the principle of “making live and letting die,” governing not merely through prohibition but through the administration and regulation of life itself.
