A historically constituted human position formed within relations of power and knowledge, neither wholly transcendent nor fixed, but open to transformation. The subject is constituted through both processes of subjection and techniques of self-care; it is therefore not a given entity but a historically produced and transformable mode of being. By analyzing the formation of the subject within both disciplinary and ethical practices, Foucault situates subjectivation as one of the primary sites of struggle and transformation.
