The practice of questioning existing relations of power, knowledge, and subjectivity by examining them within the context of their own historical formation, thereby disrupting their appearance of necessity and naturalness. For Foucault, critique does not proceed primarily through appeals to universal ideals but through a genealogical investigation of existing apparatuses and practices. In this way, it opens up possibilities for being otherwise and for imagining alternative forms of life and subjectivity. Critique thus constitutes a project of a “history of the present,” bringing together both the archaeology of knowledge and the genealogy of power.
