Disciplinary power is concentrated in institutions such as schools, barracks, prisons, and hospitals, where individuals are shaped through continuous mechanisms of observation, record-keeping, examination, and assessment. This form of power is not merely prohibitive or repressive; it is also productive, actively constituting and producing subjects.
