A surveillance architecture consisting of circularly arranged cells surrounding a central observation tower, designed to produce self-discipline through the condition of potentially permanent visibility. For Jeremy Bentham, the Panopticon represented an “ideal” institutional model capable of generating the greatest degree of obedience and efficiency with the fewest supervisors. In Foucault’s analysis, this concrete architectural design becomes the formula for the political anatomy of disciplinary society—an ideal schema for the microphysical control of bodies and conduct through mechanisms of surveillance, normalization, and self-regulation.
