A mode of speech through which the subject constitutes himself or herself as a subject of truth by speaking the truth directly to those in positions of power or to others, despite the risks involved. Parrhesia is a key dimension of care of the self and of the critical attitude: the subject articulates what he or she takes to be the truth even at the risk of endangering personal interests, relationships, status, or security. In doing so, the subject not only forms and affirms his or her own subjectivity but also challenges and interrogates existing configurations of power.
